Ok so this thread started 2 months ago, has anyone heard anything from Dometic?.
Heck at this point I would even settle for a rumor. 071.gif

According to an article in one of the camping mags I get sometime in April units installed on new campers the manufacturer will notify the owner. Not sure what happens for after market install.

Well now it has been a while since I was involved with the forum. Had some family stuff going on.

I'M BACK.
OK this is what I know. Dometic has issued a recall with instructions.
Firstly go here http://www.dometicusa.com/recall and enter your info.
That will take you to a page that informs you how to shut off your fridge. dry.gif .
Kits should be available in April and from what I have heard it will involve replacing the entire cooling unit.
However I just spoke to the repair shop that I deal with and they informed me that Dometic is not returning their calls. Probably waiting until the kits are ready.
This is not uncommon. I work for John Deere and quite often customers will get a notice before we do. And with the wonderful conection that we all have we are even further ahead. 071.gif comp26.gif

Anybody have first hand experience with their fridge catching fire? I'm wondering how serious the problem REALLY is? I plan on getting it fixed when its possible. But I don't think I'm scared so much as to stop using my fridge. And I can just imagine how swamped every repair shop is going to be when Dometic finally allows them to do the repairs. Might take weeks to get an appointment. For them to think its OK to just tell people to stop using their fridge for a couple months while they figure out what to do is crazy if the problem is so serious. They should be offering people BRAND NEW fridges right away.

Whew. fing32.gif My refrigerator was not on the list. I wish I could say it's a big relief, but I wasn't all that concerned after reading from the reports just how hard it is to make a fire from the problem.

I can't promise anything, but will darn sure try. I'd like to meet the rest of the group. we will be going to Rockaway OR first then on up to your locations. Have everything ready and about ready to get on the road for Baja next month.
Oh by the way thanks for Bob Acosta's name and number. He was great to deal with and I belive I got a fair price for insurance in Baja.
Will keep you posted.

I can't add much to the discussion about the Dometic problem, except to say that Dometic contacted me by snail mail around March 1, 2007. My Dometic was in a travel trailer that I sold two years ago, so I sent the name of the new owner to Dometic.

About six years ago I had a recall notice on a Norcold that was in my Coachmen Class C. The dealer replaced the "eyebrow" control panel. It seems that if someone really tried hard to hold a bottle of milk above the top of the fridge they might spill some into the control panel, which might cause a fire! The dealer gave me the old control panel for a souvenir. There was very little difference between the dangerous old panel and the new one that was installed. I think it was much ado about nothing, but it cost the company (and ultimately, the consumer) a lot of money.

I rec'd a Dometic recall notice about two weeks ago for a Lance that I no longer own. I'll have to take another look at it to see just what it says needs to be done.

According to this NHTS safety recall the fix is a bandaid to prevent a fire and not fix the potential leak problem. When I talked to dometic they said parts would be available in late April.

I got my Dometic Band Aid fix done today...Took the shop about a half hour. What a pathetic band aid fix this is. I can't beleive it took them months to come up with it. All it is is a piece of sheet metal to add a second layer to hopefully isolate the fire when your fridge blows up. Doesn't bother to address the issue of the fridge spontaneously combusting. Brilliant. I feel a lot safer now. trink08.gif

Yup, that looks like a pretty lame "fix". I would of expected better from Dometic.

Heck, I could have done this myself in less time, but they probably wouldn't cover the warranty. But, think about it, if the fridge does blow up and burn your camper to the ground you will have the proper fix designed and sanctioned by Dometic. LOL

Fridge Fire
Bigfootford over at RV.net has been doing a lot of research on this issue and is convinced the grounding arrangement in both Dometic & Norcold Fridges is inadequate. I tend to agree with him. It would probably be prudent to check yours on a regular basis. I wonder if the fact the area is exposed to the elements is simply causing oxidation at the junctions & subsequent increase of resistance which could cause a fire.

Bought a used unit that had not been done and had the recall stuff installed today. They are still doing it and the process was easy. The fix is a bit more than that panel in the picture. There is also a thermal sensor they attach to the chimny and several sets of fused wires that I assume shut stuff off if and when the leak happens. Still not a real fix but better than I thought.
