Recently, I learned that our Club's Treasurer, Sally Stomberg's son, Ryan is serving his second tour as a Marine in Iraq. I asked Sally if there was anything we, as a club could do to show our support for his service. I know there are strong feeling about the war, and I fully understand that, but we, the US and Canada, both have sons and daughters serving and this is intended to show support for the troops, not a statement for or against the war.

Here is what Sally said:Thanks for the offer for Ryan, Larry. Actually there is something the club can do if you want. During Ryan's last deployment, he and 5 of his buddies wanted a tactical Buck knife. Karl's best friend growing up married into the Buck family and now works for them so we were able to get dealer pricing on the knives and the guys all paid us back. Now with this deployment, more guys wanting in on the knife deal. A style was picked out the weekend before the guys left for the sandbox. Karl & I went ahead and bought the 50 knives and we had them engraved with their platoon and dates over in Iraq. We are now raising money to pay for the knives so the Marines don't have to. They think they are buying them, little do they know. Its one way to thank them for their service to our country. If the club would like to sponsor a knife, it costs $85 which includes the shipping we spent getting them to Iraq. They guys should have them in another week or so.

Sally

As you can see, Sally and Karl went to bat and bought 50 of these knives on their own. Let us start of list of people who are willing to help by buying a survial tool for a Marine. Let us show our support for one of our own and her brave son and his buddies.

Juts a suggestion, why I don't I set up a paypal link to donate money to & then Sally can purchase them & have them shipped. Count me in as well. It can go into the NATCOA account which Sally has access to. I will put up a quick BOD vote. Should not be a problem, we flush store items through it.

Capital idea. I seconded it a short time ago. Please start working on it ASAP, I have every confidence it will pass. Also, we could use the P.O. Box in Bellingham for those who do not use or have access to pay pal and just in case Sally does not want her address out on the net.

I think this is a great idea. We do appreciate all the soldiers overseas and what they are doing. This is meant to show a few how much we appreciate their efforts. Both Canadian and U.S. soldiers deserve our support no matter what our feelings of the war are. I hope to meet Ryan someday on his return. Let me know where to send the cheque. I am sure other manufacturers will be more generous. They know how much I hate being outdone by the competition. Please put me down for five. Thanks Ryan.

Ohmigosh! I am overwhelmed to say the least. I don't think I have any tears left at this point. I logged in to read the forum and saw this. Karl thought someone died when I went out to tell him what was going on because I was bawling like a baby. You all are just such amazing people.

I do have one request - I need a picture from each of you. Karl is putting together a collage of the platoon and people who have donated towards a knife to give to everyone involved. Include your camper in the picture if you want.

We have such brave men and women who have and continue to protect our countries. I am eternally grateful for their sacrifices and service so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have.

Update on where we are since we don't want to exceed our goal.

Goal: $4,163
Total Raised: $2,937
Amount to go: $1,226 (or 14.42 knives)

Thanks again. I am finding it so hard to express how touched Karl and I are by everyone's generosity.

Sally, I am assuming these guys had net access. What if I set up a forum here they can post their comments on without having to register? I can do that, I just have to give them a password so they get in, not spammers. I can use your sons name as the pass.

Paul, you never cease to amaze me! That is a wonderful idea. That way, Ryan and his guys could let us know if they need or want anything else. I am sure that there are other NATCOA families out there that have kids or grandkid in a war zone and we could have our members pass on the password to them and we could hear from them as well. Make it so.

Dammit woman, buck up, there will be no crying. This is what people do for people. Now go bake some pies and pluck that bird for the Thanksgiving day feast. Oh ya, and pop open a beer, take a deep breath and smile. But no crying please... :D

Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving Sally and Karl.........................

Ha! No pie baking or bird plucking for me! I'm on doctor-ordered bedrest for a couple of days including Thanksgiving day and Karl is having to take over kitchen duties. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not. Karl cooking? :fing32: Thank goodness my sister is coming over to help out. And no beer allowed either.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving, too.
