Bob Mehrer (SR) drove me up to Chute Lake this weekend (location of Aug 1st-3rd on the caravan). The road up there is graded but fairly steep. Nothing that should be a problem, for a car or a 2wd truck & camper The massive Okanagan fire has destroyed sections of the forest in the area. It's noticable on the far side of the lake, but the campsite & lodge are fine & the area is still quite aesthetic. Fishing & swimming are good in the lake & there is a sensational view over Okanagan lake from the old Kettle Valley rail right of way, which is drivable if you remove your camper. We will spend all day on the 2nd up there. the 3rd is tours of Snowriver & Okanagan (also maybe Westland). Anyone who is sick of tours, can either stay at Chute or we can drop them off on the sandy beach at Skaha Lake or they can float down the canal (which joins Okanagan & Skaha Lakes) on inner tubes. I'm especially thinking of any kids that are along. Also on the 4th we are staying at Okanagn RV Park in Westbank. The plan is do some wine tours, there are waterslides nearby, so maybe someone who does not want to do wineries can volunteer to supervise any kids that want to do that instead.

I also took another look at Manning Park group site. There is one water tap there, but we will have to combine hoses to refill out tanks since it is about 150 feet way from the closest point we can pull a camper. There is a sani dump on the highway 3 miles away. Closest hot showers are in the main campground about a mile away.

Hi Paul
Thanks for the look ahead for us. Now that's dedication to the tour! I was wondering where the Old Kettle Tracks were and now I know. I think if the weather is as hot as I think it's going to get..us low 30's climate people will be looking for any kind of water to cool off in. Our last summer never had a day over 30. I'll volunteer to be the first Water Rat. :P

Hi Paul,

Thanks for all of the info on the caravan. Just wondering...is there campfires allowed at Chute and Manning?
I love just sitting around a campfire at night.

Campfires are allowed at both. It depends on if the BC Forest service has placed restrictions on them due to fire hazard. At Chute lake, Bob Mehrer said he will bring up his propane fire if there are restrictions at the time. Otherwise we will burn your snowbird.

Paul - I note that you mention "swimming" at Chute - not sure if thats gonna be that great, but it's been 20 years since I was there, so I won't dissuade anyone. But it's a pretty cold lake.

HOWEVER, at any lake in the Interior, please be sure to let folks know about the possibility of "Swimmer's Itch", a duck/snail-related parasite that floats in the water. To avoid it, vigorously towel off immediately (and I mean immediately) after leaving the water. They are tiny little buggers that just rest on your skin when you are in the water, but once they sense that its starting to dry, they burrow into your skin. You will find the experience "memorable", but not in a nice way!

It's not a bad idea to make sure you have some calamine lotion, powder, or creams like Caladryl on hand..... just in case. A shallow bath in luke-warm water with several tablespoons of Baking Soda is supposed to help, as well.

I see the plan is now to be @ Westbank - does that mean that Fintry is off?
