I plan to cache my way up the Alcan in May... Just got back from South Africa, did the Sailor's Star cache at Cape Point, which is now my southern most cache (and it will be hard to beat).

:)

Cache On!! :fing32:

hey jamninalong....better watch out im close to catching up on cache finds and will pass you soon. lol

we found a cache today while we were on a short hike with our cub scout den. the area was the little Spokane river area. we have never hiked in that area and its less than 10 miles from our house. we will be back to hike some more there and try to find the other 3 caches in the area.

I am looking at the Magellan explorist 110 handheld gps.

ive read the reviews and it seems like its a great gps for the money, $129.99. does anyone have any input on that gps?

I got a gift card for cabelas and was looking at that.

Have a look at the Garmin eTrex 10 same features as the Maggelin but Garmin makes a better product in my opinion. For security put a lanyard on the unit and attach it to a belt loop there easy to lose and can be hard to find it happens.

I have owned a Magellan Explorist 210 for the past 8 years. It finally died after my son dropped it for the third time. It worked very well and I found over 500 caches with it. I replaced it with a Garmin 78 (should have gotten the Garmin 78s) which will float if I take it on the water. Since I am mentally as well as finger challenged, I bought something I can manage with a few buttons. Of course, my learning curve is somewhat steep since I haven't gone out lately. Caching is a fun hobby but if you are in a race, you can't win it. I know some people who have over 5000 caches. They are more than willing to help others, especially newbys to get going.

Hawke, good luck on your upcoming trip. I saw where Torklift now makes an underbody battery box. However, you can make one on your own if you don't mind a little sweat equity (and lots of "foreign" words).  You might consider getting a Travel Bug sticker and putting it on your camper; then you can be "found" in the most unlikely places.

For anyone acquiring a GPS, make sure it has a strong lanyard. If not equipped with a holder, then make one from cord (e.g,. a net) so you don't lose it or drop it. I'm considering using some liquid tape on the key edges to provide a soft place for my new 78 to land on which should help save it when (not if) it gets dropped or bangs into a large rock.  Rubber carrying cases do help, even if they are expensive. My son lost a $300 GPS when it fell out of his pocket when hiking. Although he discovered the loss within ten minutes he never found it.

its no race, it was a joke. a monster was created when i was told about geocaching. it really is a fun hobby.

im not sure about a touch screen gps. i hate my smart phone sometimes with the touch screen. i am leaning towards the simple button features.

a good case is a great thought. thanks!

yeah I imagine. the places it takes you to is by far the best part.

im still trying to figure out how you did 19 in one day. ill have to map out the caches to see where you went.

at least 1 of the 2 we could not find on sunday was called "the black hole of.....(something or other)" the cache has disappeared from time to time. so maybe that's why we couldn't find it. another we couldn't find a while ago has been shut down for now. others have not found it either so the cache owner has put it on hold or what ever you call it.
