So are the gears stripped/worn or are the pre-tensioned springs not doing their job anymore? Or all of it? Are the rear roof corners solid? Is the roof dry or water-soaked and heavy?

I am also redoing a Roadstar. Is there a way it lubricate the tension springs? I think that is my problem.

The roof lift I have seen taken apart on the old Palomino that my buddy restored worked like this:
The tension spring is basically just a steel rod that runs inside the top pipe. It is fixed to the roof at the rear and to the lift scissors at the front. When you lower the foof, the spring gets loaded - i.e. the rod is torqued.
When the roof is down, the rear lift mounts are constantly under tension. This is why they tend to turn out of the horizontal when the rear roof board loses its strength due to age or rot.
They are not under tension when the roof is all up.
Be careful when you remove the roof lift, there is a lot of force stored in these springs.
I can not imagine that they need any lubrication. From my recollection, the torque rod is less than 1/2" thick, and there is a lot more space in the top pipe of the roof lift.It fits in there very loosely.
If your rear roof mounts are out of alignment, the spring loses some lift power. It has about 1/4 turn to fully load, if it is 10 degrees out of alignment the loss of force is probably noticeable.
The lift mechanism itself can probably be greased and is subject to wear.
Another factor is possibly increased roof weight. If the roof is of the old wood/styrofoam style, it can soak up a lot of water, as both materials can absorb it.
