We're getting further and further away from the title of this post which is good food in the UP,  But.... always good to hear about good places to eat around the country. Otherwise, its just a crap shoot.

One of our methods is to check out the number of cars in the parking lot. I can check TripAdvisor or some other web site to find the "Best" restaurant in an area while on the road, but if the parking lot is empty, we roll right on by. Or, my other half may unexpectedly hit the brakes, turn around and pull into some sketchy looking place to eat just because the parking lot was full !! We figure all those people can't be wrong. Well, not all of the time, anyway.

Will have to make a note about Catfish Charlie's.

We have a favorite in Birmingham called Saw's Juke Joint. Great ribs & onion rings! and another favorite in downtown Tuscon is Cafe Poca Cosa. Oh man, got to get back in that TC and git back on the road to eat at some of those great restaurants !! Have been home just 3 days!!

Did the sister's jello have sliced banana and some green grapes in it?  It's what's served in Norwegian Lutheran church receptions, wedding or funeral.

Ha! Yes!!  But, that is just one variation on a theme! My mother's favorite was orange jello with shredded carrots & pineapple. Purty durn good too. I made it for a 4th of July potluck here in Vt one year. People were very confused by it. Just didn't understand. I had to bring most of it home. Not a lot of Lutherans in these parts!!

The ND town I grew up near was so severely Norwegian Lutheran, we made fun of Swedes, hardly credited Germans for anything, and discriminated against the Catholics.  I'm not joking.

But all the social values are going away.  As a former classmate of mine said last fall, now Norwegians are marrying Swedes, both are marrying Germans, and worst of all, Republicans are marrying Democrats. :sign0020:

Except for my wife's niece, I'll bet residents of Burlington would think lefse was some kind of flat pastry, and be surprised it's really fried potatoes with butter and something sweet spread on it.  We won't bring up lutefisk.  My Grandma made me eat it, so I still can't stand the smell.

I was never forced to eat lutefisk and still have never acquired for taste for it. I figured those that had their taste buds trained at an early age were the only ones that could appreciate it.

Yep. Not too many Scandinoovians in Burlington, I bet. French Canadians- probably.

Have never had lefse but it does sound good. Luetefisk?? EOW. don't think I'd be brave enough to try it. My daughter & son-in-law had the real deal in Sweden. They both said it was an 'interesting' experience. That word that polite mid-westerners use instead of "it was dog-breath".
