had to mention a few of our usual stops going thru the U.P.- from Vt to Wi via Ontario. (with a stay at Kilbear Provincial Park- our all-time favorite place) - something we do every fall.
we always make a stop at Muldoon's in Munising for pasties. (OK guys, not THOSE pasties)- the tastiest ones we've had. get the gravy to go with.
we also have to stop at Huron Bakery in Marquette. great breads, muffins & pastries- but also croissants stuffed with ham/cheese or feta/spinach or pepperoni/mozzarella or other yummy things. Very good.

Thank you amcclaran, but I moved away, and I must learn to... to... be satisfied with what I have here. I miss my lake. I miss some things like Muldoons' pasties, and Huron Bakery bread. But I must learn to endure without those nice things. (Sounds of weeping in the background.)

Dang, y'all are making me hungry. I want a good poutine. I need a road trip to Canada or at least Minnesota!

The interstate system of highways is fine for getting where you need to be in a hurry, but it's the road less traveled that is more enjoyable. Take in the scenery before life passes you by in a blur.

I used to go backpacking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I got to the Visitor's Center and get a permit, then to Muldoons to get a pasty, then Holiday to get a cookie or two.  Then I'd go backpacking.  People always talked aobut eating freeze dried food when backpacking. They didn't know how to backpack, obviously.

Ooooo, poutine.  Man, this is just a terrible post topic.  Terrible.  I'll be back to complain some more when I get back from the refrigerator.

Going over to Martineza's to get breakfast tacos. You don't know good Mexican food if you live outside of south Texas

One of the best breakfast tacos I ever ate was in South Texas. Oh, how I miss going there with my dad.

GORPY food? We don't need no stinkin' GORPY food. LOL. Hope you had a good dinner, Anne.

well, too bad for us, we got there too early & they weren't open yet. had to toodle on to my sister's house and have traditional midwestern Lutheran food. cold cuts and fruit salad and jello.
of course, TexMex in these parts is not even close to TexMex in Texas or NM, but didnt think we could drive that far for lunch.
are on our way back home to Vt. - gotta git back to work.
pic is of our fave spot at Kilbear Prov. Park, near Parry Sound on Lake Huron.

Road food update:
Move over Muldoons!! took southern route thru the UP from Wi. due to road detour off of Rt 28 a bit East of Ironwood and missed Munising so had our pasty fix at Letho's in St.Ignace (on Rt 2 near Mackinaw bridge). No choices here- beef only, but OOOWEEE! great crust! (must be lard & lots of it!)- and the innards are very moist. no need for the gravy-out-of-the can for these. and they are HUGE !!
better than Muldoons by a fair bit.
... and on the food topic: for anyone traveling US Rt 2 going thru Ashland, Wi. - best food in town is at the Second Street Bistro. Smallish menu, but quality food. Fish Chowder is the best I've ever eaten. Seriously. Burgers are great .
and lets not forget to mention the Ashland Baking company. Wonderful sourdough breads and great pastries too. (I'm an expert pastry eater so I know good when I get it)
Hungry anyone???

Trying to remember the name of the Pasty shop we hit on our last trip through Yooperland.   It was like a local chain, as we came across it in a couple different towns, but they made a good pasty :).

Dobber's maybe?? Did a little research on Best Pastys & that was one of the possibilities & was sort of a chain. We considered stopping at Dobber's in Escanaba (not in the moonlight, tho), but opted to go a little further & try Letho's. We were not disappointed! Had them for lunch AND dinner!
