Got a call this morning. My step son & 3 year granddaughter went fishing. They were in a horrible head on collision on a forestry road about 200 miles north of Vancouver. They were in a car, the other guy was in a 1 ton towing a 5th wheel. They were 30 min from a small town with a small hospital. Fortunately there was cell service so they were able to call an ambulance. He is OK but she was more seriously injured. They stabilized her & flew them by helicopter to Children's hospital in Vancouver. We got there just as the chopper arrived. They had a trauma team waiting and got her into CT scan right away. Her jaw was broken several places and her face badly cut open & she had head injuries. Been here all day. They just finished with her & she will be OK. A plastic surgeon worked on her face. I can't say enough good things about Vancouver Childrens Hospital, they were outstanding. They had a social worker waiting to help us deal with it all. They have serviced RV spots available so I can take my RV down there for her parents while she is hospital. We are thankful she will be OK.

Thanks guys. I'm going to take my brothers truck up to where it happened today and try to retrieve the boat and all his camping gear which is still at a lake (if its still there), plus what I can get out the car. He had taken her to town for breakfast & was on his way back when it happened. He had pulled off to the side to look at some horses and she had been moved to the front seat while they did that, but it was a narrow road. It was the airbag that did the damage to her but it would have been worse if there had been none. I will try & take a photo of the car. We don't even know who the other party was, but I will talk to the RCMP there today and hopefully get a copy of the police report to see if we need to take any legal action with regard to the other party. Apparently they went out there to measure skid marks (Gravel road). My step son thinks they were moving at a good clip, but with the trauma who knows how good his memory is. They came over the crest of hill & lost control. Its 3 hours drive from here. Haven't had much sleep but a friend is going with me. It was in remote area and my step son had to do CPR on her to get her breathing again. A plastic surgeon worked on her face for 2 hours last night and it looks remarkably good considering how it looked when they took her off the chopper. I'm just glad they decided to airlift her to Vancouver rather than transfer her to another center where they are not as geared to deal with child trauma.

For those in BC familiar with the Merritt area, it happened off Coldwater road on the way to Davis lake. His stuff is at Boss lake where I am going to go today. I am so impressed with Childrens hospital, they are going to get a fat donation from me at the end of this month. That resident social worker they assigned to us, I can just imagine what his job must be like most of the time.

Yeah. She lost her baby teeth sooner than expected. One of the worst things was they insisted I take her dad over to Vancouver General, even though they had x-rayed in Merrit. They would only look at him superficially at Childrens which I understand, adults are not their mandate. At least they allowed him on the chopper rather than leave him 250 miles away. VGH is Canada's largest hospital & a zoo in its Emergency. Trouble with Sundays is its always full of people with minor problems who can't seem to wait a few hours to see their regular doctor in the morning. That bogs it down for people who really need to be there. The guy ahead of us had a minor scrape from falling off his bike that a squirt of Lanacaine would have fixed. It just happened to have occured a block from the hospital, so he figured emergency was the place to go. One of the disadvantages of a "free" system. However, when we told them his daughter was in the ICU at Childrens they took him to the front of line.

Paul, I am so sorry to hear about your family. Although your granddaughter was hurt, it appears she is getting good care. Take care of yourself so you will be able to help them. Having spent a lot of time in hospitals lately, take your laptop/tablet with you when you visit. You'll be able to stay on top of the family news and be able to help if something comes up. Again, best wishes for you and your family.
