The limitation was set at 10 posts which I think will have no effect on most casual posters, but still satisfy those paid members who feel prolific posters should help pay the cosst of running this forum & the club in general.

I like the new format but there is one issue that I find very annoying. I find it very frustrating when I click on a topic header and get an error message because I don't have permission to read topics in the "private discussions" portion of the forum. That's fine that I don't have permission, but don't show me the header and then not let me read the info. Hide the entire section so no one can see it if you don't want members to read it. JMHO

I know, I can't avoid that, I am going to see if they can fix that with the next release so only the originator & mods see the heading. The section itself is very useful for keeping open bickering off the forum, however.

I did just make one change. I think topics there will no longer show up in view active content or todays post unless you are the originator. I have to test it. If that works it should solve the problem

That topic appeared before I changed the forum format. I agree with you on the post restriction, but as I mentioned in another forum I am doing this to see the reaction. If it stays, 10 may be a more resonable number. I don't know. The other looming alternative is a read only forum for non members after so many posts have been made. For most here that means it would be read only immediately. Personally I believe it should be completely open, but I may be in a minority. I am trying to try out a few alternatives as a compromise.

I agree with the forum being completly open. With restrictions you get exactley that, restictions on the number of people who will join NATCOA.

Spell check does not work for me. It looks like iespell is used for the spell checker, which I have. Has anyone else had this problem?

I like it open as well, but i don't think the 10 post restriction will affect very many and it does have the advantgae of reminding them that if they join, there are no restrictions. I can change ito 15 or 20 even.

The problem with the private conversation area is fixed, I think. I found another setting that seems to make them invisble except to the originator.

There is no spell check in this forum software. If you see one its generated by your browser, not here. I imagine someone will be coming out with a mod sooner or later. The spell check mod for the old software won't work with this one.

I am the proverbial "old dog" with issues of "new tricks." Please accept the following as constructive criticism and not as a complaint:

First and foremost, the new site is painfully slow. It is almost as if I feel I am on RV.net on a bad day there!

I have perused the new forum since its inception and find navigating around it very cumbersome. We now have tabs "New Content" and "Today's Posts" which seem similar and of which I cannot see a difference. (Do we really need both?) In addition, there is similarly new feature on the right side labeled "Recently Added Topics." this latter one is only good for only the 4 most recent threads and it does not have a go to "1st Unread" feature so if it is a long thread, one must scroll through the whole schmee of already posted replies. Did I say cumbersome? May I add repetitive?

I do not want to compare this forum to RV.net, but I must allude to it with respect to the number of topics or agendas or whatever categories are initially appearing on the Main NATCOA Forum page. We are a single type of RV but we seem to have as many (or more) topics than an all- inclusive RV.net type of forum. We have categories of NATCOA Corporate Members" and "Brand Specific Topics." It seems as if the Brand Specific Topics category really is not such. It is more like a general "Truck Camper Topics" category. Oh yea... there is one on those too! Did I mention repetitive? In which category does one post a general question regarding truck campers?

In the last format, there was the Brand Specific Category (which I liked) which eventually got merged into a single category. It seemed to get carried over to this new site, but is used very little. There is the "General Topics" category. Is it general topics for what? Truck campers? Is it for everyday banter (a la "Campfire" on RV.net?) If it is general for TC's do we need it since there appears to be 3 other places for Truck Camper discussions?

There is a "Private Conversations w/ Admin, Moderators & BOD" section. It tempt us as it shows up, but access is not permitted. If this is a site not for the general populous (members or not) why have it show up? Just the fact there is this section makes members what types of collusions are going on behind our backs... (not that there is any going on... it just appears that way.)

We have an "Announcement" category but there are several sticky’s within each individual category. Can these variously placed sticky’s be located in the Announcement Topic? It would clean up the various topic categories of which I do not have to scroll through just to get to the meat.

We have separate categories of "Trucks, Trailers & Towing" and "Other RV's." It seems that these two could be combined since they are similar.

We have link categories of "Going to Mexico" and "Going to Canada." Could these be placed as sticky's with in the "Trips, Reports/ Crossing Borders" category? (again, just suggestions to perhaps make navigating less confusing among similar items.) Perhaps this Trips and Reports category could be combined with "Rally's Shoes & Caravans." These seem to be similar to me as they have to do with trips and travels.

There is a category titled "Camper Projects & Technical Issues" I like this category, but if I have a tech issue with my NorthStar, do I place the question here on in one of the other 4 truck camper categories related to truck campers?

Within the "Member's Only” section there are individual topics of “Good TC camping/ Dry Camping” and “Free/ Almost Free Camping.” Again, similar topics that could be combined.

As of this time, there are no replies in the “NATCOA/ INCOA Member Businesses.” The subheading is “List your business here & hopefully other members will use you if they can.” What is the purpose of this category? Are the Corporate members supposed to individually list themselves here? How is this section different from the “NATCOA Corporate Members” category?

We have a tab at the top and a link for “Rally’s & Show Calendar” that direct one to the same link location. Since both are identical is only 1 necessary?

Does the category of “Trouble Tickets” need it own major sub- division called “Post forum Problems & Bugs?” This is an important category, but I see it related to the basic of this website and it could be the last item in the “Discussions” sub- division.

I know this is long winded, but perhaps the reading of this reply exemplifies the repetitiveness of the new format as I see it. I think that the KISS principal can be applied in several places to make it more user friendly (even for old dogs) and also it may be more enticing to potential new members.

well, I have tried combining several, possibly more could be combined. I actually find this forum loading faster than the old one, so that is odd you find it slower. This is a major software upgrade and it has bugs. The only reason we moved up to it now instead of waiting for 1 or 2 more releases was because it had a very good mod to foil spammers which have been a big problem over the last few months. There is a distinct difference between view new content & todays posts. New content is that you have not read, no matter how old. Today's posts are all the posts made in the last 24 hours. If you view a post in new content it disappears until another reply is made there. This makes it tough to find the thread again, hence the today's post link to make it easier. The private conversations section was made necessary by people insisting on raising their complaints about moderating on the open forum. This seemed to be leading to bickering sessions. We created that section so they can vent in private with the moderators & admins. If all that dies down we can remove it. We are trying to think of a better way to configure it. Maybe using the new PM conversations feature.

Rally & shows calendar link, I will remove the dup.

Forum & bugs report section was temp for the first few days after the cutover, it can be removed.

Moving stickies to announcements is a good idea we will do that.

Faster or slower we can't go back. The old software will soon not be supported. We did have to change servers & it is possible this new one is a bit slower, but its the same host. IF you are using Firefox, I have noticed lately that everything is gettign slower with it. When i tried IE 7 it was now much faster.

Using IE7 at home and I have found it to be quite a bit slower. Until tonight - but that may be because of the testing Paul is doing to find out why I can't access the forum when using IE6 (at work).

However, I really like the new look and feel (though I agree with lots of the suggestions so far in this post).

Many have stated that there are way too many different sections and the forum is confusing.
I couldn't agree more.

IMO, there should be about 8-10 sections, maximum and total. No more than that.
Many sections can be combined or deleted totally.

Keep it simple and user friendly.

I do appreciate the effort that Paul and others have put into running this forum. Certainly, a lot of work and not for the faint of heart... :)

Damned if I do & damned if I don't with sections. I have eliminated dozens already. If you are a member, you see a lot more as well. Best thing to do is use the new post button and then just worry about where to start threads.

Maybe we should have a poll on all of them.

Paul, I know that folks are hitting you up with all sorts of questions and stuff regarding the new format (me included...)

but..

..Is it possible to get a "First Unread Post" button for the topics when one clicks into the threads within the "View New Content" and "Today's Post" tabs? Those 2 tabs are convenient (I still don't know the difference between the two... but I hit 'em both up so it doesn't matter)... but the 1st unread feature would be fantastic!

The more sections you have, the slower the forum.
Also, subscriptions to topics - turn that off - it makes the server work to send out all those emails with each post and bogs everything down.
