Keeping in mind that it is still a work in progress, what does everyone think about the new forum software?

Don't take the 4 post restriction on surfers into account. That is just an experiment & may not stay. I am talking about appearance & functionality

I was happy with the look of the old format. That doesn't mean the new one is bad, just takes some getting used to.

I prefer the new one. The look and feel brings the forum up to date with current web standards. There are a few minor "beautification issues", but we will get those ironed out soon.

There is little choice but to change, the big issue is security. They stop supporting security upgrades on older versions eventually, then you are open to spammers & hackers.

The IP.board is a good forum format and widely used.
My preference if for the jelsoft product, but think this forum format is a good choice.

The layout design needs a lot of work.
I would recommend a review of other ip.board forums and to basically copy one of choice.
Re-inventing the wheel (in terms of layout and design) isn't for the untrained novice.

Users are far more advanced than just a few years ago and expect more.
In the internet world, it's "lead, follow, or get out of the way".

There are no options as of yet. We will likely purchase one or 2 professional skins once they become available in a few months. I personally think the default layout is quite good.

I think it is a great improvement. Much better look and feel :)

when I view "today's posts" do I have to see the private/restricted topics like "why should NATCOA exist"? Most of the time I don't look at what section a post is in before clicking on it.

I know you are just testing it but the 4 post thing is not going to work with a forum of this size. Been there done that. People will stop using your forum pretty quickly

That topic appeared before I changed the forum format. I agree with you on the post restriction, but as I mentioned in another forum I am doing this to see the reaction. If it stays, 10 may be a more resonable number. I don't know. The other looming alternative is a read only forum for non members after so many posts have been made. For most here that means it would be read only immediately. Personally I believe it should be completely open, but I may be in a minority. I am trying to try out a few alternatives as a compromise.

The reason we use invision is becasue this forum evolved from invisionfree which was version 1.3 and did not cost us anything. I have admined a phpbb board before & I prefer invision. There are advantages & disadvantages to difering board software.

My web design meetup group just started doing critical reviews of owner volunteered websites.
This is a live face-to-face group and we have an internet connection with a projector.
If you'd like, we could review the NATCOA forum web site "design" and maybe get some professional input.
PM me if you'd want that.

Sure, any input is welcome. Lisa, a new admin here, is a professional web developer & she is going to do a makeover of natcoa.com. Not that it's all that bad as it is, but it's time for a new look after 3 years, and she has some new tricks up her sleeve. Not to mention the feminine touch. We will do it when we move it to this new server, it's still over on the old one.

I don't know if I would call it "feminine touch"... I'm just a techie type who is also "artsy fartsy"!

BTW Rich - Paul says that the photo in the forum header belongs to you. If you don't mind I would possibly like to use it in one of my design prototypes. I would need the original full image if you have it. PM me if that's OK with you and I can give you an email address where you can send it.

I honestly preferred the older version, but as others have said, it may just be a matter of getting used to something new. I will say however that I don't like the new posting limitation, however, I can live with it. On the other hand, if things go the direction of read only, then I will likely go elsewhere.
